Hockey Nets Release
Completing the season with a “Gordian Knot” severed
I have had this book on my mind for several years. It began as a seed planted right here in this newsletter, and I want to thank you for staying interested, reading, and commenting as it grew. This year, I decided to “mine” those past posts—from Shelty to Nourished by Grace—to create this expanded, 44-page illustrated edition of Hockey Nets.
This is a story for children and parents alike. It is a mirror for our relationships and a guide for those who have been betrayed, hurt, or tempted by bitterness. Most of us have experienced the pain of being the “cast-out”—the one standing on the curb while others play. Yet, we must also recognize the “oppressors”—those who penalize others to climb the social ladder. In the book, Ricky and Robbie’s choice to lie was their way of climbing, but it left them in a position where they needed a forgiveness they didn’t yet know how to ask for.
As we complete our Christmas season and head into a new year and a new tomorrow, we reflect on the ultimate gift: that God loved His creation so much that He gave His only begotten Son while we were yet sinners. His grace is the only thing that severs the Gordian Knot of sin—that impossible tangle of human failure and pride that we cannot untie on our own.
However, there is a part we must play in this divine action. Without the act of asking for that forgiveness, the knot remains. We can spend the rest of our lives—and our strength—exhausting ourselves trying to untie what cannot be untied by human hands, only to continue in the cycle of sin. In the legend, Alexander the Great used a sword to cut the knot; in our lives, Christ uses the cross to sever the ties that bind us to our past. But the moment we ask, the sword falls, and the knot is severed.
Once that which was bound is set free, we find ourselves bound to a new purpose: forgiving others the way Christ did for us. Greg’s journey in this book reflects this freedom—the choice to forgive despite what he went through, because he understood that grace is a gift meant to be passed on.
